Singing at PCHS

The Plainfield Central Choral Department has been a long standing tradition for the high school. Since reopening its doors in 1992, the school and choir department have grown exponentially throughout the last two decades. The choir department features three curricular ensembles: Concert Choir, Treble Choir and Mixed Choir. Concert Choir is the most advanced curricular ensemble, made up of auditioned sophomores, juniors and seniors. Treble Choir, consisting of auditioned sophomore, junior and senior women, continue to grow on the curriculum and pedagogy taught in Mixed Choir, the entry level ensemble for all freshman, sophomore, junior and senior students.

It is our hope that the majority of students who register for choir as freshmen continue to perform in a chorale ensemble at Plainfield Central throughout their high school years. After being a committed member throughout one's high school career, students should be able to sight read music, understand the human voice, gain poise from performance experiences, appreciate the necessary components of teamwork and develop and intangible gift of self-expression. Beyond the academic and musical achievements, participating in choral ensembles will result in valuable friendships, high quality relationships, individual growth and lifelong memories from creating true musical moments. This combination of academic, group and individual skills will provide each student with a unique opportunity that only the performing arts can provide.

Curricular Choirs

Mixed Choir

The Mixed Choir is the entry-level curricular choir. All freshmen are automatically enrolled in Mixed Choir and any student at PCHS is welcome to join Mixed Choir with no audition necessary to join the group. The curriculum is designed to cover the basic foundations of music reading and music theory for the beginning musician, to extend the abilities of more advanced students, and to increase singing confidence and aptitude. The Mixed Choir performs at the three choir concerts throughout the year, as well as the annual Collage Concert. Members are eligible to participate in any musical extracurricular activity.

Treble Choir

The Treble Choir an auditioned, treble-voiced ensemble for sophomores, juniors and seniors. The curriculum is designed to  increase the foundations of music reading and music theory from Mixed Choir, extend the abilities of more advanced students, and increase singing confidence and aptitude. The Treble Choir performs at the three choir concerts throughout the year, as well as the annual Collage Concert. The members of the Treble Choir are encouraged to perform in the IHSA Solo/Ensemble Contest during the year. All members are eligible to participate in any music extracurricular activity. Members are expected to practice individually and in extra rehearsals or sectionals. Members are eligible to participate in any musical extracurricular activity.

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is the top curricular ensemble at PCHS, and an auditioned, mixed-voiced ensemble for sophomores, juniors and seniors. The curriculum is designed to increase musical skills and abilities to an advanced level. Members will find themselves challenged by the level of difficulty of music, rudiments of music theory, and concepts of singing that are covered. The Concert Choir has a very active performance schedule throughout the school year including scheduled concerts, special programs, and SPC festivals. Members of Concert Choir are encouraged to take private vocal lessons, audition for ILMEA District and All-State and participate in the district's Solo and Ensemble Contest during the year. Members are expected to practice individually outside of class. Concert Choir students are encouraged to audition for the Madrigal Ensembles and CentralSound Ensemble.
