Hundreds of teachers learn Advanced Placement skills at D. 202 institute

Two hundred forty-four teachers from across the country and around the world came to Plainfield North High School for two weeks in June to learn or strengthen their Advanced Placement teaching skills.

District 202 has hosted an AP Summer Institute every year since 2009, except for 2020 because of the pandemic.

The district is one of the few K-12 school districts to host these programs, which are usually held at colleges and universities. AP-certified and College Board-approved instructors lead the classes which comprise 30 hours of training in 24 AP subject areas.

Advanced Placement is not a curriculum per se. Rather, it relies on a unique teaching approach to engage and support high school students with the more challenging college-level courses.

“To host these summer institutes is a real compliment to the district and our staff,” said Dr. Dan McDonnell, director for high school curriculum and instruction. McDonnell and Dr. Craig Brown, director for high school administration and personnel organize the AP summer institutes.

“Plus, our own teachers learn best practices from the very best AP instructors, which then helps our students do better in the classroom, which is obviously a real benefit for District 202,” McDonnell said.

To date, 4,433 teachers have attended the AP Summer Institutes hosted in District 202. This year, attendees came from 25 states and Puerto Rico, including 160 of the 244 who came from outside Illinois. As well, 19 District 202 teachers also attended the institute.

This year, the district used $24,000 in AP Summer Institute proceeds to fund twelve scholarships for students who excelled in academics, participation in sports, clubs, or organizations inside and outside of school, and had a financial need.

AP courses taught this year included: Art & Design; Biology; Calculus AB; Calculus BC; Chemistry; Computer Science A; Computer Science Principles; English Language; Environmental Science; European History; German Language; Government & Politics; Human Geography; Macro/Microeconomics; Music Theory; Physics 1; Psychology; Spanish Language; Statistics; US History; and World History.
