District 202 offers families new counseling tools for the summer

District 202 is providing two new counseling tools to families over the summer following one of the most challenging school years in recent memory.

“We strive to create a culture of well-being of students, parents, staff and community,” said Tim Albores, director for high school student services.

“That goal is more important than ever considering the emotional impact the pandemic has had on students and families,” he said. “We are happy to do what we can to support our families and students through these special partnerships.”

District 202 families can find local mental health and substance abuse-related treatment resources through the “ReferralGPS” online system.

ReferralGPS is a free, optional tool providing a searchable database of treatment options based on the family’s home address. It can also help District 202 families needing triage and to set appointments. All information is taken anonymously and is completely confidential.

District 202 purchased the Referral GPS program two years to support families through referrals made by district social workers. Families can use the tool to research options independently by visiting https://referralgps.com//find-help/PSD202. 

While District 202 families may still want to discuss options with a social worker or counselor, they can now also use ReferralGPS. 

Likewise, District 202 has also partnered with Hartgrove Behavioral Health System to provide general counseling services this summer.

Available services including both in-person and virtual individual and family therapy; group therapy; and telepsychiatry services. Hargrove is an insurance-based facility but also takes students who receive public aid.

District 202 has long recognized the need to support social-emotional learning to help improve and assure students’ academic success.

In recent years, the district has created and implemented ten new programs, services, resources, and professional development to help students address emotional challenges and succeed in and out of the classroom.

Among other initiatives, District 202 hired 20 new social workers district-wide; created anonymous social-emotional learning hotlines; and hosted community programs about suicide prevention and mental health first aid.
